We all know managing alone may be very difficult. It can negatively affect our physical health, our mental health and our spirit. Too often the elderly are left alone due to the inability to drive, move freely or limited finances. Imag- ine being confined to only the small home in which you live. In the words of Shimon [the son of Rabban Gamliel], “It is not what one says, but rather what one does, that makes all the difference in the world.” Become “that person” who makes the difference in the twilight of another person’s life. Volunteer for the Good Deeds Corps at Jewish Fami- ly Service today. It is time to change the world for the better one person at a time. “Nobody makes a greater mistake than he who does nothing because he could only do a little” (Edmund Burke). By volunteering as little as once a month, you can make a difference. Volunteer Opportunities: • Offer a friendly call for some good conversation • Provide companionship to a frail sen- ior by sharing a cup of tea or lunch • Escort a senior to a medical appoint- ment for moral support • Share a special interest such as art or poetry with a small group of seniors • Change a light bulb, bring in the mail or pick-up a prescription (it’s the simple things in life that count) • Go shopping – Be a handyman – Offer a drive to the park – Go for a walk • Cook with a senior and share a meal • Grow vegetables and donate them to those in need of healthy food! The sky’s the limit… As a volunteer you will receive compre- hensive training, ongoing support and a sense of accomplishment and meaning. For more information on the Good Deeds Program contact: Carol Bender at 908-725-7799 X124 or Carolb@jewishfamilysvc.org The Good Deeds Program is supported in part by a grant from the Grotta Fund for Senior Care. In addition to provid- ing the Good Deeds Program, JFS is committed to serving the needs of the entire community and offers a continu- um of programs and services. Licensed clinical social workers provide individ- ual, couple and family counseling as well as geriatric assessments, support- ive counseling and case management services for home bound elderly. The Family Mentor Program recruits, trains and matches volunteers with vulnerable young families or with elderly persons for friendly, supportive, in-home visits; Families with children with special needs are assisted through social groups, parent groups and through the Family Mentor Program. Career Coun- seling helps individuals in many aspects of their job search. Ohr Tikvah-Light of Hope Jewish Healing Services offers presentations, support groups, and individual spiritual counseling to address the health, wellness and healing needs of the community. All informa- tion is confidential. Many programs are at no cost, on a sliding fee scale or payable through third party insurance. “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever does.” – Margaret Mead Become a Good Deeds Ambassador Today!
