The unseasonably warm weather during the holidays inspired me to look for some outdoor activities that didn’t involve snow or ice. Browsing through the weekend section of The New York Times, I was immediately drawn to “Walking Tours.” Two of the tours listed for Christmas week included New York Talks and Walks’ “Brooklyn Bridge Walk Into The New Year,” beginning with the his- tory of the City Hall area and then the famous bridge itself, and Big Onion Walking Tours’ “Christmas Day Jewish Lower East Side Tour,” highlighting buildings, landmarks and stories of Jewish immigrant families. My love of walking, New York City and history all came together and prompted me to look for other tours to plan for in the warmer months. Not surprisingly, there are many walking tour outfitters, each with a unique twist and rates vary- ing from free to fairly pricey. Below is a list to choose from: Adventure on a Shoestring (212-265-2663) 90-minute tours of mostly lower Manhattan neighborhoods but also tours of Astoria, Hoboken and Roosevelt Island.
