Health and Wellness

By: Michael Cirone, PA-C Excel Urgent Care, Chester, NJ As the flu season is now upon us… we are all interested in how to avoid getting the flu, available treatment options, and how best to prevent fur- ther spread of the disease. The best way to avoid getting the flu is to be vaccinated yearly with the influenza vaccine. This vaccine only works for the season it was administered as the strains of the viruses change slightly from year to year. Also, immunity from the vaccine fades over time, so remem- ber to be vaccinated each year. The influenza vaccine is readily available and it is never too late to be vaccinat- ed, even now. This season, we at Excel Urgent Care of Chester are offering the influenza vaccine free of charge for ages four and over. The CDC (Center for Disease Control) suggests everyone get their flu vaccine. The disease is more severe in those over age 65, with weakened immune systems, children under five, pregnant woman and up to 2 weeks after delivery, those with dia- betes, lung problems, or heart disease. It is even more important these individ- uals get their vaccine. To avoid the spread of germs, including the flu, remember to wash your hands often or carry a small hand sanitizer with you. Cover your mouth when coughing and avoid others when you feel ill. Adequate hydration, plenty of rest, and a healthy diet are essential in flu season to avoid illness. Taking Vita- min C and Zinc at the earliest sign of ill- ness may be beneficial. Many people think they have the flu when it is more likely a typical cold. Symptoms of the real flu include docu- mented fever, chills, severe body aches, cough and possibly sore throat, headaches, and even diarrhea. The only way to know for sure is to be eval- uated by a health care provider. At Excel Urgent Care we use the latest rapid flu test available with results within 10 minutes while you wait. After being evaluated our provider will discuss treatment options with you and of course staying hydrated and fever control are key. Our providers will also evaluate you for secondary infections like pneumonia, ear infections, or Strep throat. We even provide intravenous hydration in our office if it is felt appro- priate by our provider. We also provide X-ray services on-site if needed if pneu- monia is a possibility. The flu is contagious twenty-four hours before and for about five days after the onset of symptoms. Once diagnosed, it is important to prevent the spread of the flu by staying home, if possible, until you are free of fever for twenty- four hours without the use of fever reducing medication. This usually translates into about five days for most people. If you must go out in public with the flu, wear a mask to prevent the spread of infection.
