PHOTOREJUVENATION By: Rebecca Lu, MD, Elite SkinMD Mohs and Dermatologic Surgeon Photorejuvenation is a type of anti-aging treatment that uses high-intensity broad band or fil- tered light (known as Intense Pulsed Light) to treat signs of aging in the skin, such as sun spots, age spots, “liver spots,” hyperpigmentation, and broken blood vessels. Photorejuvena- tion is one of the most well- known and effective methods to treat sun spots, brown spots, and redness from chronic sun damage. It has a strong safety profile and the technology has been around for decades, with newer devices having the ability to filter certain wavelengths for optimal treatment. In a nutshell, the energy from the light beam is converted to heat energy, which is absorbed by the target lesion, and destroys it. The treatment is non-invasive and well tolerated. Most people will require 4-6 treatments, but this is depend- ent on each person’s individual situation. Some people may need maintenance treatments, since aging and sun exposure continue to occur. Each treat- ment session takes around 15- 30 minutes, and is pretty well tolerated. It is not painful, but feels rather like a hot rubber band snap. Sessions are typically scheduled about 1 month apart. The other great thing about IPL is that there is minimal down- time. Your face will not be raw or weepy. I usually advise my patients that brown spots do temporarily become darker after a treatment, like a “coffee- ground brown” color, for 7-14 days before they slough off. However, you can cover it with make-up so it is not necessary to take time off from work during this period. When treating broken blood vessels, redness, or spider veins, the treated area may become purple, red, or bruised in appearance. This does not hap- pen to every patient, but can happen especially when dealing with larger broken blood vessels. This usually resolves in 1-3 weeks, and can also be covered with make up. When treating either brown spots or broken blood vessels, sun protection is critical during the healing period. It is impor- tant to wear sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every day while your skin is healing. Winter is the perfect time of year for photorejuvenation!
