Opened in November 2016, the made-to-order confections found on the menu can be over- whelming, with enough fresh flavors and fillings to make you drool as you ponder what to order. Owner Carrie Neigel fell in love with Duck Donuts while vaca- tioning in the Outer Banks with her family. “My son was up extra early and my husband took him to Duck Donuts and when they returned with a few, I had one bite and was in love,” she recalls. Upon returning home, she want- ed to bring Duck Donuts to the local community and hoped that everyone would love Duck Donuts as much as they did. Open every day at 6am, a morning rush from commuters taking donuts to their office is a normal occurrence, as is the after school flock of students who want a sweet treat. And these are not just your average donuts. Starting off with a vanilla cake- based donut, each donut is made fresh while customers wait and are topped to their liking as soon as they come out of the fryer. “The toppings are where the fla- vors really come out and from one donut to the next they can be quite different,” says Neigel. “We have the classics - cinnamon sugar, glazed, and powdered sugar but also have several coat- ings to pick from: chocolate, vanilla, maple, strawberry, peanut butter, lemon, blueberry.” Toppings include a barrage of choices, such as Oreo, bacon, coconut, sprinkles, and peanuts, to which they then have drizzles, which include hot fudge, salted caramel, raspberry and blackber- ry. Guests can mix and match and get whatever combination they choose, but some favorite combi- nations are Maple Bacon, Vanilla with Oreo, Blueberry with Pow- dered Sugar, and Cinnamon Sugar with a vanilla drizzle. With a party room now avail- able, Duck Donuts also makes for an easy and fun atmosphere for children’s birthday parties, with activities including decorat- ing your own donut among other games. In addition to parties, they also cater events and have their very own 4x5 foot Donut Wall, consisting of a customizable chalkboard for including special messages and congratulations. Neigel not only loves whipping up these delicious treats, but also watching locals enjoy their time at the store. “It brings me a lot of joy to see something so simple as donuts bring so much happiness to our guests,” she says. “We live in a very busy and stressed world and my goal is to try and make that world a little sweeter.” Sounds like life at Duck Donuts is about as sweet as it gets.
