SOMERVILLE DENTAL
SLEEP MEDICINE
78 East Main Street
Somerville
By: Lori Crowell
Dr. Richard Charmoy
Those looking for state-of-the-art
dental and sleep apnea treatments in
a warm environment need look no
further than
Somerville Dental
Sleep Medicine,
located at 78 East
Main St. in Somerville.
The practice is headed by Dr.
Richard Charmoy, who specializes in
fields related to dental medicine such
as the treatment of periodontal dis-
ease and obstructive sleep apnea
(OSA). As one of the leading doctors
on the East Coast for sleep apnea and
snoring treatments, Dr. Charmoy is
committed to helping sufferers of OSA
who cannot wear a CPAP (Continuous
Positive Airway Pressure) machine
through oral appliance therapy.
“Having practiced dentistry for
more than 20 years, I was introduced
to this new field which opened a
whole new world of helping patients
in need of this type of therapy,’’ said
Dr. Charmoy of his role in the recog-
nition and management of snoring
and sleep apnea. For patients who
snore or have had difficulty wearing
their medically prescribed CPAP, Dr.
Charmoy has the experience neces-
sary to offer a dental solution with
oral appliance therapy. “I offer a dif-
ferent solution, and a longer life, to
those who suffer from sleep apnea
and cannot wear a CPAP machine.
Only a qualified dentist can provide
this treatment, in conjunction with a
sleep physician.’’
Oral appliances have become an
accepted treatment for snoring and
mild to moderate obstructive sleep
apnea. This small plastic device fits in
the mouth during sleep like a sports
mouth guard or orthodontic retainer.
Oral appliances help prevent the col-
lapse of the tongue and soft tissues
in the back of the throat, keeping the
airway open during sleep and pro-
moting adequate air intake. These
appliances may be used alone or in
combination with other treatments.
Dr. Charmoy has treated hundreds of
patients with positive results. “My
patients are happy, and their spouses
are happy. Patients tell me they are
rested and have more energy, and
are less tired at the end of the day.
These are all positive signs that they
are getting into a deep level of sleep.
Oral appliances have become a great
option for many people,’’ Dr. Char-
moy adds.
Dr. Charmoy is a member of the
American Dental Association, the
New Jersey Dental Association, The
Prestigious Seattle Study Club, the
American Academy of Dental Sleep
Medicine and the American Acade-
my of Sleep Medicine. Next year he is
looking to earn diplomate status
from the American Board of Dental
Sleep Medicine, which acknowl-
edges professionals who possess a
special competency in the field of
dental sleep medicine. “More people
today are becoming aware of OSA.
My goal is to continue reaching out
to the public on this issue, and help-
ing those who suffer from OSA,’’ Dr.
Charmoy said.
Among the more routine dental
services offered by Dr. Charmoy are
fillings and cleanings, cosmetic con-
touring, cosmetic dentistry, cosmetic
fillings, crowns and bridges, extrac-
tions, implants, jaw/TMJ services,
root canal therapy, scaling and root
planing, specialty dentures, veneers
and whitening.
Dr. Charmoy’s office is convenient-
ly located in downtown Somerville.
