As the summer ends, and the
school year is about to begin,
we are reminded that much of
life involves change and coping
with those changes. Children
may be going to a new school, a
new grade, away from home to
college or away from college
into the working world. All will
face new situations and new
challenges. Parents who find
themselves home without their
children for the first time also
face the challenge of what to
do, or what to do first. In addi-
tion, divorce, the loss of a parent
or spouse, the end of a job or
beginning a new job, a job
transfer, or retirement are all
challenges that most people will
face at some point in their lives.
How we cope with these life
changes and challenges depends
on a variety of factors. One fac-
tor is temperament, the inborn
personality we arrive with when
we come into this world. Some
people are naturally sunny, opti-
mistic, and adventurous and
they often show resilience to
challenges and setbacks because
of their personalities. Likewise,
some people are temperamen-
tally sensitive or pessimistic, and
they may struggle with even
mild changes.
Another factor is our experience
with previous changes. If changes
have been abrupt or traumatic
in the past, then there may be a
tendency to see any change as a
reason for anxiety. This is partic-
ularly true for children, who may
take away from the experience
that the world is chaotic, dan-
gerous and unpredictable. These
childhood assumptions may fol-
low us well into adulthood.
There are periods in life when
we are most vulnerable. For
some it could be adolescence,
when the individual is develop-
ing their sense of independence
and competence. For some it
may be the parenting years,
when raising children may
reawaken feelings from one’s
own childhood. For others, it
could be mid-life, when ques-
tions about aging, worries about
our limits and finding meaning
in life can begin to emerge. In
the extreme, these vulnerabili-
ties can lead to anxiety and
depression which makes these
transitions even more difficult.
Psychotherapy can help in a vari-
ety of ways. It is a process that
offers the opportunity to reflect
on what is and is not working in
one’s life. Therapy can help with
developing coping strategies.

ty to discuss your difficulties
with an objective professional
whose role is to help with prob-
lems in living. If you have con-
cerns about yourself or a family
member, we can help determine
whether the experience is an
expected reaction to stress, or if
there is something more serious.
