Reduction mammoplasty (com-
monly called breast reduction) is
one of the most common and
most rewarding surgeries per-
formed by plastic surgeons. Large
pendulous breasts typically cause
upper back, neck and shoulder
pain. They can interfere with sleep
and the ability to exercise, and
make mammograms more difficult
to perform. Breast reductions
which both reduce the size of the
breasts and lift them up, have
been shown to be highly effective
in alleviating these problems and
therefore are considered to be
medically necessary by health
insurance companies.
The benefits of breast reduction
were recently expanded by a study
published in a leading plastic sur-
gery journal. Using a survey admin-
istered to patients before and after
breast reduction surgery, the pro-
cedure was found to provide not
only physical but also psychosocial
health benefits. On a 100 point
scale, satisfaction ratings soared
from the 40s pre-op into the 80s
post-op in categories including
appearance, quality of life, physical
ability, sexual function and social
interaction.
The surgery is performed under
general anesthesia and usually
requires no hospital stay. Most
patients return to work in 7-10
days. The surgery should not be
performed on girls younger than 17
whose breasts are still growing, on
women within one year of breast
feeding, currently losing weight or
those who cannot be medically
cleared for general anesthesia.
Coverage for breast reductions
varies among insurance compa-
nies. All companies have a limita-
tion in height/weight ratio, and a
minimum removal amount (500-
1000
grams depending on that
ratio). Most companies also require
proof of medical necessity. This
involves supporting letters from
independent sources (primary care
physicians, chiropractors, derma-
tologists, etc.) describing symp-
toms such as pain or rash and the
attempts to treat them such as
NSAIDs, fungal creams or physical
therapy.

reductions or insurance company
