Page Background www.theconnectionsnj.com THE VALUE OF LIFE COACHING By: Patricia Diesel, CPC Life is filled with uncertainty, wouldn’t you agree? We do not know what the future may bring or how prepared we will be for what may happen. If we allow ourselves, we can worry excessively about things we do not have any control over. There are countless things most of us feel anxious about right now – jobs, relation- ships, finances, health, etc., and of course the “what-ifs” of life. Most of us carry this burden with us on a daily basis, feeling overwhelmed and powerless. Are you plagued with anxiety? And I don’t mean the occasional stress that knocks on our door. What I’m talking about is the non-stop, hovering over you like a cloud type of stress. In other words, are you living a lifestyle of anxiety? Studies have shown, and quite frankly, my experience has also shown, that this kind of worry robs us of living the life we deserve. It’s as if a thief comes into our inner space and steals our peace and joy. This endless cycle of worry, if left unchecked can affect our health. Many people, unfortunately do not choose to do anything about this cycle until they are in a complete state of overwhelm – making it difficult for them to function. Some, seek out solutions that will only pro- vide a temporary fix with no long term res- olution, thinking that eventually the exces- sive worry will just “go-away.” I believe it is necessary to address the root causes of our anxiety. Fear happens to be just one of the root causes. When we are fearful we typically “react” to stressful situ- ations instead of responding. We immedi- ately and directly go to the “dread” of what could happen in the future or per- haps doubt our ability to handle the situa- tion. Whatever the cause of our fear, we can see that the problem is our focus. What are you focusing on? Do you immediately go to the “what if” of what can possibly go wrong or do you seek out the underlying “cause” so you can find solutions and resolve? Below is an excerpt from my client’s book she is currently working on. I share this with you in an effort to showcase the benefits of life coaching for those who may be seeking support. Most of my life I have felt that I have had my path clear and open for me. Even if things didn’t work out as I envisioned them, my life was reasonably content and productive. As I grew older and experi- enced repeated setbacks and losses, I real- ized that I was in a holding pattern, and was suddenly unable to plan for the future. Was there a future? What were my next life steps? Where did I go from here? When I started working with my life coach, Patricia Diesel, I was resistant. I felt as if I had a stone egg inside of me that I had to protect at all costs. I had been hurt, I had been rejected, I had lost beloved people who meant so much in my life. I wasn’t ready to accept change or growth as I had when I was younger. Patricia’s methodology was straightfor- ward: a gentle tap with a small hammer on that stone eggshell. Nothing happened at first, but soon with a little more tapping, there was a small crack. Light could get in…new ideas; a change in perspective. A little more tapping, and light could come out: my creativity (long-buried) and my true self, free to soar. When light gets in to your inner core, you start to open yourself to new ideas and atti- tudes. I never realized that I had a habit of talking over people. Or more precisely, I knew it, but did nothing to try to change the habit. Patricia asked me to try to explain why I did it. I answered that I was so enthusiastic to communicate with others that my words and thoughts just tumbled out. She advised me to “take a breath” before I spoke. A simple thing to most folks, but a new con- trol for me. As a result of this conscious miniscule change, I have become a more considerate listener, and have picked up on nuances of conversation that I had previ- ously missed. “Take a breath, Barbara.” As that little hammer taps, taps, taps on the shell that protects your innermost thoughts and wishes, it exposes them to the light and possibility of coming true. Of actually coming true. What is your passion? What would you do if you were free to do anything? Who are you inside? What were you hiding from that no longer has any power over you? Since working with Patricia, I have begun to believe in myself and my dreams in a way that I never did before. I am a new person, more myself than ever. I am so happy to meet you. –B.
