SUSAN J. FRIEDMAN
LCSW, DVS, BCD

By: Tatiana Javier
Susan J. Friedman
Susan J. Friedman, LCSW, DVS,
BCD
is a licensed clinical social work-
er with in-depth individual, family
and group clinical experience cur-
rently in private practice in Somerset
County. She earned her MSW from
Rutgers University and received post-
graduate certification in family stud-
ies from the Center for Family Stud-
ies.
Susan
began her 30 year career
at the New Jersey Division of Youth
and Family Services (DYFS) in Bergen
and Passaic Counties. During her
eleven years at DYFS she developed
and instituted community relations
programs, assisted in the formulation
and implementation of a research
and training project alongside faculty
at Farleigh Dickson University, provid-
ed expert testimony on the effects of
child abuse and neglect and as Case-
work Supervisor provided clinical
supervision to all the staff.
In 1986,
Susan
moved with her
husband and eight month old
daughter to Louisville, Kentucky
where she became the director of
Bethel Baby Break, a church spon-
sored child care program. Upon her
return to New Jersey in 1990,
Susan
gained employment at the Resource
Center for Women and Their Families
becoming the first outreach coun-
selor for child victims in New Jersey.
While at the Resource Center,
Susan
co-developed and implemented the
Healthy Families program which was
featured on PBS’s
“
Faces of Fear.”
Similar to her work at DYFS,
Susan’s
focus at the Resource Center was on
educating children about family vio-
lence to promote their safety which
facilitated their recovery from
domestic violence. She also worked
with the domestic violence shelter
and transitional housing program to
provide an integrated children’s pro-
gram. During this time,
Susan
earned her certification as a Domes-
tic Violence Specialist (DVS) and her
Diplomat of Clinical Forensic Coun-
seling (BCD).
In her private practice
Susan
assists her clients in setting realistic
goals based on their needs and
wants. “It’s a process of small
changes and insights that build to
create a better, calmer, more fulfilling
life,” explains
Susan
regarding her
counseling methods. “To have a
place to share the depths of who you
are with someone you know cares
for you no matter what seems a pre-
cious gift to self.”
As part of her divorce coaching,
Susan
acts as a family/child specialist
and communication coach promot-
ing a healthy restructuring of the
family through the divorce/separa-
tion process. “It seems to me that
our lives have accelerated so much
that it is not difficult to understand
why patience is in very short
demand. It appears that we are all
operating at a frantic pace,” says
Susan
who places a strong emphasis
on patience and thorough communi-
cation.
Susan
is a member of both the
Academy of Certified Social Workers
and the National Association of
Social Workers. As a board member
of the NJ Collaborative Law Group in
matters of divorce, she works
towards solutions that benefit chil-
dren and spouses to avoid litigation.
Susan
can be seen regularly on
“
Through the Looking Glass”
on
Comcast Cable.
Susan
truly has a
multidisciplinary background and
approaches each individual with
compassion. Feel free to reach out to
Susan
