The sun gives off ultra violet (UV) light that can cause sunburn, skin cancers, and accelerate the signs of aging over time. In fact, most of your skin’s aging is due to the exposure of UV light. Fortunately, anti-aging medicine has made sig- nificant strides in preventing and reversing signs of sun damage. Here is information and treatment options to help your sun damaged skin. Wrinkles – Wrinkles happen when the proteins in our skin such as col- lagen, responsible for keeping our skin firm and smooth, break down due to aging and UV light expo- sure. The most common places for wrinkles to appear first are around the eyes, forehead, around your nose and even your cheeks. Popu- lar treatment options include: Botox ® is a prescription medicine injected into muscles and used to temporarily improve fine lines and wrinkles. Juvederm ® is the #1 selling collection of hyaluronic acid fillers in the US. Each product in the collection adds volume to a different area of the face to lift cheeks, smooth paren- theses lines, or even plump lips. Sun Spots/Age Spots – To protect ourselves from the sun, our skin produces melanin to block out harmful UV rays. Melanin is the rea- son for your summer tans, but an over production of it in one area can cause it to clump together and form undesirable brown and age spots. Popular treatment options include: Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a light therapy treatment that targets dis- coloration of the skin. The light energy in IPL is absorbed by the unwanted pigment in our skin and causes them to destroy themselves. Chemical Peels are a topical acid treatment (mild to strong) used to penetrate the outer surface of the skin for accelerated exfoliation, helping improve skin texture, mild discoloration, and fine wrinkles. Medical Grade Products – They include Retinols, Growth Factors, Hyaluronic Acids, Vitamin Enriched Moisturizers, Sunscreens with Anti- oxidants, etc. Prescription strength topical treatments are stronger than those available over-the-counter and will often have better results! It is important to consult your doc- tor if you find any new or changing spots on your skin as there is always a potential for skin cancer. Despite the effectiveness of the treatments mentioned above, there is still no way to reverse all long- term sun damage completely. That’s why the best habit will always be prevention. Protect your- self by making small adjustments to your sun habits such as limiting sun exposure, wearing sun-protective clothing, and applying sunscreen daily (at least 30+ SPF, even in the fall and winter!). With great habits and the help of modern medicine, you can look and feel your best! Health & Happiness! 154 Mt Bethel Road, Warren, NJ 908-755-8400 www.BellaFinaMediSpa.com
