Fanik MBS CEO Farris Fanik “Take up one idea. Make that one idea your life; dream of it; think of it; live on that idea. Let the brain, the body, muscles, nerves, every part of your body be full of that idea, and just leave every other idea alone. This is the way to success…” My brother and I had just gotten back from Barnes and Nobles to his apartment in Newark in the Ironbound district. We started conversing as we were leaving his car and entering his place; a conversation we have had a few times before. It always started with the same question, “Farris, what are you passionate about?” My response to him was what it always was, “Sam listen, some people have a passion and some people just do what they are good at, or what brings in good money.” He was not satisfied, nor convinced with this response, so he decided to try a differ- ent angle. He asked me, “Farris, is there anything in your past that you loved, but just didn’t go for.” I took a moment of silence to myself and thought for a second. Had there been anything in my past that I truly loved? My mind initially jumped from class to class in my undergraduate studies to see if I really enjoyed anything in par- ticular. While pondering, my mind hap- pened upon a course Science called Sports Marketing. We had an assignment to write a business proposal. My first thought that came to mind was something health and fitness related, as my major was Exercise Science and my interests included working out, health, and nutrition. Now something that trou- bled me deeply was when doctors sim- ply told their patients something along the lines of “take this antihypertensive and walk more often.” The reason this bothered me was because I know that may stop the progression of the dis- ease but it does not stop the root of the cause. If this patient was instead prescribed a cardio focused workout regimen and a proper nutrition guide alongside proper medication, that patient would be much better off and could actually reverse the effects of his disease! This in itself drove a very strong pas- sion in myself, which is why I have been working out regularly for the past five years and always focused on eating healthy. It just deeply bothers me that there are so many people with diabetes, heart disease, and obesity that don’t do anything to really help themselves. Now this was the problem I wanted to solve in my business proposal. I started explaining this concept to my brother. My idea was to create an environment where doctors, nutrition- ists, and personal trainers could work together to ensure the patients’ indi- vidual needs were addressed and prior- itized. I was not satisfied with the cur- rent state of healthcare facilities or fit- ness facilities, but if I were to have doc- tors work closely with personal trainers to ensure continuity of care, this would be exactly the new type of healthcare we need today. When my brother heard this con- cept he saw something in me and I had noticed it too. As I was going on and on about the possible intricacies of the business, I realized my passion: I want- ed an environment where I could inte- grate fitness, nutrition, health, and wellness. Moving into Get in Shape for Women, a business that already focused heavily on fitness and nutri- tion, was the perfect stepping stone to fulfill my vision.
