Not quite ten years ago, I went
to a local golf course on the spur of
the moment to pick up a game.
The starter placed me with three
other single players who had the
same idea as I had. The four of us
did some first name introductions,
shook hands and headed to the
first tee to start our round.
After we played a few holes, we
started talking to one another with
typical small talk along the lines of
where we lived, what golf courses
we liked to play and how often we
got out to golf.
One of the golfers lived in the
Summit area, so we didn’t talk a lot
about Warren and the surrounding
area. However, while standing
around and waiting due to crowd-
ed weekend conditions on the
course, I noticed his last name on
his bag tag. It looked familiar,
although it wasn’t a particularly
unusual name.
So I asked him if he had any rel-
atives in Cincinnati, where I was
born and raised. He told me that he
too was from Cincinnati. I asked
him if his parents were named
James and Joyce. They were
indeed. I am not sure why I was
able to recall his parents’ first
names, possibly because of their
alliterative sound or maybe the
name of the author James Joyce
that reinforced my memory.
My mother and father knew his
parents many years ago. The only
time I could vaguely remember his
parents ever visiting our home was
after my father passed away, which
was in the late sixties.
My new golfing partner, their
son, is several years older than me
and we were quite sure that we
had never met in Cincinnati while
growing up. We finished the round
of golf and went our separate ways.
Later in the day I spoke with my
mother, who still resided in Cincin-
nati. I told her the story. She lis-
tened dutifully as I labored through
the details. When I finished, she
told me that she had not seen
James and Joyce for many years but
for some reason they had called her
about a month ago just to say hello
and see how she was doing. During
the conversation they had decided
it had been too long since they had
seen one another, so they arranged
a dinner outing.
My mother, who knew that I had
many “random connections,” sim-
ply said, “It figures that you met his
son by chance today, because I just
had dinner with his parents last
night.”
