The term “tile design” is being trans-
formed before our eyes with a flood of
new material hitting the market today.
Decorating trends change frequently in
the industry due to the vast amount of
innovative materials seen on a daily
basis. Mediterranean Tile and Marble
prides themselves in sculpting design

products. Design Sales Associate, Liz
Cullen, has been working in the tile
world for over 11 years now. She
joined Mediterranean over 5 years ago
as they opened their second show-
room in Bernardsville, NJ. Since then,
Liz has developed many long lasting
relationships with contractors, design-
ers, installers, and retail customers in
the surrounding area. “The trend that I
am observing right now involves cre-
ative use of materials”, says Cullen,
“Anyone can produce an elementary
design. By taking a step back from the
ordinary and mixing in the
new materials available to
us, you can design a fresh
and updated look.”
To some homeowners, the
large array of materials
offered can be over-
whelming. Designers in
both the Bernardsville and
Fairfield showrooms spe-
cialize in creating custom
looks that can fit any
budget. “Not everyone
comes to us looking to do
an entire bathroom in
intricate mosaics, nor do
they like the price tag associated with
it. A great aspect of my job is being
able to combine the over the top selec-
tions with cost effective materials, so
that we can deliver a one of a kind look
that pops, with a bottom line that you
feel happy with”, states
Cullen. “For example, in a
recent pool bathroom
project (as pictured), I
combined inexpensive
12x24 porcelain tile with
high end blue iridescent
glass mosaic, giving the
space character with a
stand out focal point.”
Manufacturers using recy-
clable products to create
beautiful tile, is a move-
ment contributing to the
availability of cost effec-
tive materials. “Embracing
the use of natural stone and glass leads
you to an outcome that will be stun-
ning in either a classic, transitional, or
contemporary design. All while know-
ing you are buying with an environ-
mentally clear conscience”, says
Cullen. Mediterranean carries a large

cled materials that would otherwise
end up in a landfill or go unused. They
work with vendors making the effort
to become sustainable “green” manu-
facturers, who not only help the envi-
ronment, but contribute to affordable,
timeless products.
“While working on a project, half the
fun is seeing the expression on a
client’s face when you gently push
them out of their comfort zone,” sug-
gests Cullen. “Their eyes light up as
their vision takes on a life of its own.”
