David John Rush has painted for more than
50
years. He is known
internationally, showing his
work in numerous countries
throughout the world & has
painted in Maine, Paris &
parts of Europe. Living in New
Jersey, he continues to paint
daily and is currently active in
exhibiting & teaching.
Mr. Rush graduated from
The Famous Artists School
in Westport, Connecticut under Norman
Rockwell, Albert Dorne, Peter Helk, Rudy
DeRenya and other famous artists. His
BFA is from the Newark School of Fine
and Industrial Art in Newark NJ. He was
an instructor at this school from 1965-
1971.
Rush also taught at Montclair
State University, Joe Kubert School of
Cartooning and Graphic Design in
Dover, NJ and William Paterson Universi-
ty. He was the head of the Graphic
Design Department & Co-chair of the
Fine Art Department at Sussex County
Community College.
Mr. Rush’s association with Hannes
Beckmann resulted in the introduction
to Josef Albers. In 1967 Albers invited
Rush to work with him in the summer
which led to the friendship between
Rush, Ben Cunningham, Charles N.
Smith, Beckman and
Albers. All were involved
with the gestalt study of
color theory.
His work has been seen in
many shows, exhibits,
books and movies. Upcom-
ing, Rush’s work can be
seen at MAYO Performing
Arts Center, Morristown NJ
until January 2, 2013; Sus-
sex Public Library until Jan-
uary 2013; Chester Public Library in July
2013;
and Madison Public Library in Feb-
ruary 2013.
