of The Warren-Watchung
Connection. It has been a diffi-
cult time for many with the dis-
asterous results Hurricane Sandy
brought to New Jersey. As a community, we have
pulled together as loss of power closed businesses
and inconvenienced residents. Some of the local
townships have instituted a reverse 911 emer-
gency call system where the police departments
are able to update residents and businesses via cell
phone. This has been extremely helpful to many
communities this year. Check with your local mu-
nicipalities to inquire if the program is available in
your area, as it is such a great help navigating the
power outages. Hopefully the worst is behind us
and we look forward to a mild and joyous Holiday
Season!
We are delighted to present many new and re-

Our special sections dedicated to making our

issue in your homes this season as a great resource
for shopping, professional care and dining.
Our cover painting, entitled “New Shoes” is a
watercolor painted on rough watercolor paper.
The talented artist associated with this work is
David John Rush, who has had a 50 year career
as an artist and instructor. Mr. Rush is particularly
known for his large body of work from Stanhope’s
Waterloo Village.
He recalls the wonderful trips of his childhood
to Waterloo Village for the annual Peach Festival.
At that time some of the buildings were still open
for business. He states, “The ‘Blacksmith’s Shop’
saw a lot of activity in its time, as it was there not
only to shoe horses and mules, but the blacksmith
was there to repair farmer’s tools and implements.
This painting shows a small pony standing outside
the door waiting to get his first pair of shoes,
hence the title ‘New Shoes.’” Mr. Rush’s love affair
with Waterloo Village continued through his life
and in 1962 he became involved with Percy Leach,
a New York City/Mendham NJ interior designer,
who grew up in the village, to restore it to its for-
mer glory. Mr. Rush is still involved with The
Friends of Waterloo helping to raise money for
continued restoration. Please read his impressive
