Feng shui has become more popular
recently in decorating and home designing. Its
meaning is built upon the importance of the
home’s energy and flow. This flow applies to
all aspects of the home, not just its appear-
ance. Things such as air circulation, natural
lighting, placement of rooms and their struc-
tural integrity all come into play. Ultimately,
the primary goal of feng shui is to create an
environment that is successful, peaceful, lov-
ing, healthy and prosperous, while accommo-
dating your design and decorating needs and
desires. After reading several blogs, articles
and forums, I must say that the general pop-
ulation states that it does indeed work.
And with this investigation and research I
was able to compose a simple list of easy, do-
it-yourself feng shui implements. If you are
looking for more in depth feng shui, there are
also several local professionals that can be
hired for a more intense feng shui presence as
well as builders that are knowledgeable of this
type of structural design that focuses on ener-
gy flow in correlation with feng shui.
Lets begin with color. Red is the color of
the feng shui fire element, it represents
warmth and happiness. According to feng
shui belief you will need to incorporate red
accents into your home decor. This can be
accomplished by simple maneuvers such as
decorative pillows, vases, drapery, rugs, paint-
ings or wall hangings. Also the color tone can
be less harsh by using red tones that include
colors such as plums and purple tones.
Next lets look at the use of mirrors.
Bedroom mirrors are a simple no-no, and sev-
eral articles state that one should avoid them.
Mirrors are best used to reflect beautiful
external areas such as outdoor gardens, trees
and landscaping. Dining rooms and living
rooms best suit the use for mirrors because
they host the reflection of visitors and compa-
ny. Never reflect unharmonious views and/or
place a mirror opposite a front door. This
pushes the energy right back out the door.
Water fountains are another important
part of feng shui, symbolizing the free flow of
energy and cures. Placing one inside or out
can bring good luck and prosperity .Fountains
are recommended for the places where ener-
gy levels have been stagnant to restore bal-
ance and they are best suited in the north,
east, and southeast directions or corners.
And last yet not least; by all means, is the
importance of furniture position.
Furniture Placement Tips
Furniture and decoration placement
should be comfortable and convenient, how-
ever it should never block external and inter-
nal doorways, as that could translate to
blocked opportunities.
One of the most common rules of feng shui
is to place main pieces of furniture facing the
door, and/or off to the side. Your back should
never face the door or back into a window. This
is called the command position. Placing your
bed in the command position is imperative.
Avoid placement of a bed in front of the door
with your feet facing toward it. Doing so will
promote the wrong type of energy.
Feng shui in the kitchen can be tricky
because it involves the appliances which may
need to be moved. For example the stove and
oven needs to be placed so that the cook does
not have their back facing the kitchen door. If
movement is not possible, then simply put a
mirror behind the appliances so you are able to
see who enters the kitchen, without having to
turn away from the appliance. Also the sink and
refrigerator should not be placed next to the
oven. That would constitute mixing elements
such as fire and water, a feng shui, no-no.
In the living areas, it is crucial to create an
area that can host conversation and communi-
cation. Place sofas and chairs to allow for this.
Also try and position furniture so it has a direct
view of the entry way. Again if you are unable
to accommodate this then use mirrors to com-
pensate. There should be at least three feet of
space between furniture and pictures should be
hung not too much higher then eye level.
There are so many more general rules that
apply to feng shui decorating along with pur-
poseful reasoning. But because this is a sci-
ence of such great detail, it would take much
research and study to master feng shui.
Although I’m certain that many people just
might find the effort well worth their time.
