Located at 100 Commons Way
in Bridgewater,
Somerset Region-
al Animal Shelter
is a municipal
organization that provides animal
control services for parts of Somer-
set County, and also cares for
approximately 1,000 lost, aban-
doned and surrendered animals per
year including both domestic pets
and wildlife.
The
Shelter’s
coverage area
includes Bridgewater Township,
and Somerville and Manville bor-
oughs, and is open for adoptions
five days a week, according to
Chris Moroney, animal control offi-
cer. “If an animal comes to our
shelter that has been surrendered
by its owner, we will take owner-
ship of it immediately. If it’s a stray,
legally we have to wait seven days
before the shelter actually owns
the animal. Once in our ownership,
an animal sees the vet, is spayed
and neutered, and receives all nec-
essary shots – it’s a full workup. At
that point, the animal can go up for
adoption,’’ he explains.
Wildlife calls represent the ani-
mal control side of the shelter. “We
usually see more of these calls in
the spring when baby animals are
born and get into trouble in peo-
ple’s houses. If an animal gets into
a person’s living quarters, we will
remove and re-release it in another
location,’’ Maroney said.
While a variety of small pets are
available for adoption, including
rabbits, hamsters and guinea pigs,
dogs and cats are mainstays at the
shelter. Those interested in adopt-
ing a pet will be asked to fill out a
pre-adoption application that will
assist the shelter in matching indi-
viduals and families with the animal
that would best suit their lifestyle.
Parties will need to provide identifi-
cation (driver’s license), be at least
21
years old, and show proof that
pets are allowed at their place of
residence. If another pet already
lives in the home, the shelter
requires that animal’s shots be cur-
rent as well.
“
We have a kennel for our dogs
with pictures and descriptions of
each dog, and that information also
is available on our website. We also
have three cat rooms: an open cat
room where several animals can
roam freely, a kitten room and an
adult cat room. It’s really the same
process for adopting a cat or dog.
The goal is to match up each person
or family with the pet they want.’’
In addition to the above men-
tioned services, the
Shelter
also
provides free humane education to
schools and other interested
groups. Moroney said pet and gen-
eral supplies always are needed
ranging from food and toys to
paper towels, laundry detergent,
towels, comforters and more. This
May, the
Shelter
looks forward to
holding its premier annual fundrais-
ing event.

Commons Mall,
Somerset Region-
al Animal Shelter
is easily accessi-
ble from all major highways. Hours
of operation are Saturday from
noon to 5pm; Tuesday and Thurs-
day from noon to 4pm; Wednesday
from noon to 6pm; and Friday from
noon to 7pm. It is closed Sunday
and Monday.
