GOOD SHEPHERD
CHRISTIAN DAYCARE
&
PRESCHOOL
300
Union Avenue
Somerville
By: Patricia Whitehead
Patricia Whitehead, Director
Good Shepherd Christian Daycare and
Preschool,
Route 28 in Somerville, offers some-
thing unique in the field of child care: BALANCE.
As Director Patricia Whitehead states, “Regard-
less of a child’s cultural or religious background,
our Christian program underscores the spiritual
level of a child’s development as well as the intel-
lectual level. We balance our program with full
appreciation of the head and heart.” This con-
cept of balance sets their program apart. As a
non-profit organization, “We hope to accentu-
ate a child’s imagination, sense of wonder, and
reverence for learning and for all living things.”
Now celebrating 20 years of educating
young children, the daycare portion of the
school runs from 7am-6pm. The
GSCDC
offers
flexible scheduling for families depending upon
individual parental needs. Parents can be confi-
dent in knowing all children receive the same
excellent attention and care. As Mrs. Whitehead
notes, “Our goal is to create meaning and secu-
rity in a child’s life and the life of the family who
entrusts their children to us.” Our preschool pro-
gram runs from 9am-12pm.
The school boasts four veteran teachers and
three assistants. Teacher Ms. Iolene and her
assistant Ms. Cassie work with The Toddler Class
(
two year old children). They jointly state, “Good
Shepherd is a great place for it provides a posi-
tive learning environment and fosters strong
family values.”
Ms. Maria is the preschool teacher (three year
old children). She has been with
GSCDC
for ten
years and enjoys teaching children about the
wonderful things that God has created for us.
The school employs two Pre-K teachers who
afford a Kindergarten readiness program. Ms.
Marcia states, “I have been working at
GSCDC
for 12 years. It is a very healthy environment in
which God’s love is felt…children learn values
such as: thankfulness, forgiveness, obedience,
respect, among others that can be applied in
everyday activities and future lives. It is a blessing
to work in a place in which each child’s needs are
fulfilled day by day, getting him/her ready for the
next step in life. I believe in the importance of
early education which will positively impact
these little one’s lives forever."
Ms. Danielle, the other Pre-K instructor, is both
a teacher and a parent of children who formerly
attended
GSCDC.
“
My two daughters still love to
come back and visit their teachers. They have
great memories from their preschool experiences
here. My goal as a teacher is to instill in my stu-
dents the same sense of comfort and confidence
that my girls received while they were here.”
Two afternoon instructors round out the
staff: Ms. Becky, who is also the music teacher,
and Ms. Barbara. As Director Pat Whitehead
notes, “We are a small but mighty staff that will
grow in numbers along with our student popu-
lation. We try to keep the student/teacher ratio
low in order to faithfully attend to the children in
our care.”
GSCDC
is lucky to have a group of wonder-
ful volunteers who complement and round out
our staff. “These amazing people enrich the
school experience for all the children,” Director
Whitehead affirms. First is Ms. Judy, a master
gardener, involved in Plant A Row which donates
fresh vegetables to a local food bank. Ms. Judy
teaches children respect for the environment.
She also teaches a hands on planting class where
children make seedling pots, plant the seeds,
nurture the plants with sun and water, and
watch their work blossom into viable flowers
and fruit bearing plants.
The second volunteer is Ms. Brenda, our sto-
ryteller. Through story, movement, and imitations
she cultivates the children’s imaginations. Both
volunteers add to the philosophy of balancing
heart and head education by adding hands and
movement to a child's learning environment.
Pastor Chris Stiger and Ms. Lynda provide
weekly Chapel Time. Once a week children learn
about God, the world, values, and respect for
others.
GSCDC
mission is to create meaning in
the lives of children and this weekly program fos-
ters that growth.
GSCDC
has varied and lively programs. They
offer extended hours for the pre-school for par-
ents who have specific needs. They also have a
program called Lunch Bunch which, for a nomi-
nal fee, extends pre-school hours to 1pm. Stu-
dents bring in a packed lunch and can join their
fellow classmates for lunch from 12-1pm.
Summer Theme Weeks extend the school year
for busy parents enabling them to know their chil-
dren are positively and safely occupied. Each
week the school will explore a different “theme.”
Camp Week will involve activities associated with
camping out. Sport’s Week will engage students
in sporting activities. Music Week will explore
music and movement. The hope is to produce
children who are happy with their environment so
that they thrive and have a positive and produc-
tive outlook during summer vacation.
Throughout the school year the school holds
Special Events: Thanksgiving Day Feast, Christ-
mas Pageant, Family Fun Days, Field Trips and
fun activities for all family members. One very
special event this year is the Twentieth Reunion
Picnic. Former students and staff can visit class-
rooms and chat with their former teachers and
colleagues. Pat Whitehead stresses, “We think of
our school as an extended family. Once our stu-
dents have left our school community, we want
them to come back to share their life stories. We
are proud of their successes and the part we
played in their early educations.”
GSCDC
invites parents to visit the school and
see for themselves the power of a balanced edu-
cation. Call today for a tour at 908-704-0080.
