Each year, inspired by the Jewish tradi-
tions of tzedakah (“philanthropy’) and
tikkun olam (“repairing the world”),
the Jewish Federation of Somerset,
Hunterdon, and Warren Counties
Women’s Philanthropy Division choos-
es and commits its efforts to two chari-
table programs – one local and one in
Israel – and works throughout the year
to educate our community and raise
funds for them. In the past the division
– selected as one of five best practices in
women’s philanthropy by the Jewish
Federations of North America – has
raised funds for at risk children, under-
privileged women, those facing hunger,
and most recently, cancer care and sup-
port programs in Tel Aviv and Central
New Jersey.
This year, the Women’s Philanthropy
Division, co-chaired by Alissa Fox and
Robin Wishnie, is focusing its efforts
on the elderly, and has chosen as their
two beneficiary programs the Adult
Day Center of Somerset County (serv-
ing our tri-county area) in Bridgewater,
New Jersey, and Amutat Havaya in
Merchavim, Israel. For over 30 years,
the Adult Day Center has played a vital
role in keeping the frail elderly in our
community connected with their fami-
lies and able to live with continued dig-
nity. Each week, there are about 100
people at the center who are cared for
by a devoted staff of professionals
offering supervised day care and addi-
tional services such as transportation,
meals, medical and therapeutic treat-
ments, recreation, and more. For many
caregiver families struggling to main-
tain employment and households while
trying to keep loved ones out of insti-
tutional situations, the Adult Day Cen-
ter can be a lifeline, and can make all
the difference in keeping the elderly in
their homes.
Similarly, Amutat Havaya in Merchav-
im, Israel addresses the needs of the
elderly by offering programs compara-
ble to those run by the Adult Day Cen-
ter. Located in the Negev – an under-
developed, periphery region of Israel
characterized by a lower standard of liv-
ing and reduced income levels – Amu-
tat Havaya’s two Merchavim centers
are especially needed to compensate for
the area’s critical lack of social service
infrastructure and support for the eld-
erly. In an area where the elderly are
prone to isolation and loneliness and
their caregiver families are less likely to
find help, Amutat Havaya’s programs
are a crucial source of support, respite,
and compassion.
On October 23, the Women’s Philan-
thropy Division will be holding its
biggest fundraising event of the year,
“Imagine 2012” at the Bridgewater
Manor. Featuring comedian Cory
Kahaney (grand finalist on “Last
Comic Standing” with comedy specials
on Comedy Central and HBO), bou-
tique vendors, and brunch, this year’s
program promises to be fun and inspir-
ing while raising funds to support the
elderly at these two beneficiary pro-
