ART-4-ALL:
SCHOOL OF
FINE ART
265 East Main Street
Somerville
By: Tatiana Javier
Barbara Gerson
Exploring his artistic process,
Pablo Picasso once said, “I begin
with an idea and then it becomes
something else.” In similar fash-
ion, Barbara Gerson, founder and
primary instructor at
Art-4-All,
commits to capturing the ethos of
fine art by developing that initial
idea and venturing to channel
individual creativity through a
variety of media.
Establishing its role in the com-
munity since 1986,
Art-4-All
teaches art fundamentals to stu-
dents as young as three years old
and offers more advanced work-
shops for adult students. The
quaint school houses a large
room with tyke-sized facilities
reserved for its preschool-aged
students, another space glowing
with natural light used as an open
studio for older students, an area
downstairs that accommodates a
kiln and a cozy space upstairs that
contains some of Barbara’s own
artwork including jewelry and
sculpture.
After receiving her Master’s
degree in Fine Arts Education
from Montclair University and
teaching in the public schools for
several years, Barbara Gerson has
dedicated the past 26 years to
solely running her own school
while still maintaining the time to
teach off-location at senior
homes Arbor Glen in Bridgewater
and Fellowship Village in Basking
Ridge as well as teaching in multi-
ple afterschool programs.
Art-4-All
provides classes for
students ranging from moderate
to advanced art backgrounds and
skill levels. Classes include art for
the preschooler, basic art skills,
drawing and painting skills for
multiple levels, painting work-
shops, exploring 3-D design work-
shops, ceramics, mixed media for
senior citizens, art for mom and
me and open instructional studio.
Some of the media used during
sessions are acrylic paints, oil,
watercolor, tempera, pastels, ink,
charcoal, clay and glazes. All class-
es last ten to twelve weeks and
meet once a week.
“We are one of the only fine
art schools in the area, providing
quality, creative expression classes
in all media,” says owner Barbara
who believes fine art to be an
expression of the individual and
therefore paramount to persona
l
growth.
With an array of class offerings,
Art-4-All
also hosts birthday par-
ties on Saturday afternoons last-
ing approximately two hours. At
the birthday event, party-goers
are provided with craft materials
and given the option of decorat-
ing a sun catcher, placemat, t-
shirt or tote bag. All the fun
minus the clean up makes for al
l
the rage!
Centrally located at 265 East
Main Street in Somerville,
Art-4-
All
is an easy commute from
Somerset, Middlesex and Hunter-
don counties. Feel free to check
out the school’s website www.art-
4-all-inc.com!
