CTR is used to aid surgery on patients
with weak or damaged zonular support
(
thin tissue fibers that hold the lens in
place) as it assists the cataract surgeon
in placing and centering an intraocular
lens. It does this by providing addition-
al support to the capsular bag that sur-
rounds the eye’s lens. Intraocular lenses
are artificial lenses implanted to restore
clear vision when the clouded natural
lens is removed during cataract surgery.
When the amount of light that passes
through the lens is reduced and scat-
tered by the cataract, images are not
correctly focused on the retina at the
back of the eye. Cataract formation
affects only the lens of the eye and not
any of the other important structures,
such as the cornea, iris, retina or optic
nerve.
Having spent two years working with
the pioneer/inventor of modern
cataract surgery at the forefront of the
current technology (phacoemulsifica-
tion), she has performed over 15,000
cataract procedures. “Today, multifocal
intraocular lenses can restore both
near and distant vision, reducing
reliance on glasses, while ‘toric’ lenses
can correct astigmatism,” remarks Dr.

Eye trauma, as well as cataracts can
cause zonular weakness. CTR is not a
recommended therapy for patients who
have perforated or damaged lens cap-
sules, or on children under the age of 12,
since the eyes are still growing. Thus, as

tance that patients be evaluated by a
board-certified ophthalmologist with
whom they can place their trust prior to
undergoing any procedure.
