Shannon Hill Riding Academy
in the Liberty Corner section of
Basking Ridge is the perfect place
to satisfy your child’s (or your own)
craving for horses. Winston
Churchill said, “There is something
about the outside of a horse that is
good for the inside of a man.” This
bucolic horse farm, set back down
a long drive from the Shannon Hill
community off of Somerville Road,
is the perfect setting to enjoy the
physical and emotional benefits
that horseback riding provides.
Shannon Hill
offers riding classes
for children and adults of all skill
levels, even polo lessons for the
most proficient riders.
Cindy Del Bosco, who has man-
aged
Shannon Hill Riding Acade-
my
for about twenty years now,
has a lifelong love of horses. Her
degree in education combined with
her experience with horses enables
her to take students and turn them
into competitive horsemen while
instilling in them a love for the ani-
mals. Many of her students com-
pete in local horse shows and
almost all of them go on to ride
competitively at college.
The story of a girl and her horse
is timeless. Characters like National
Velvet and the American Girl, Felic-
ity, are all horse mad – just like the
modern youngsters who have
horse posters in their rooms and
are begging their parents to ride.
While these girls are having fun rid-
ing, they are actually participating
in a fantastic physical exercise and
developing life skills, like compas-
sion, forethought, and self-control.
Horseback riding is an amazing
cardiovascular and muscle condi-
tioning workout for children and
adults. The rider is not just passive-
ly seated on the horse. At
Shan-
non Hill Riding Academy,
they
teach the proper way to ride. If rid-
ing safely and properly, the rider is
developing strength, balance and
coordination to keep control of the
horse, burning similar calories to a
30-
minute jog or cycle ride during a
one hour ride.
At
Shannon Hill,
riders learn
skills like patience, trust, compas-
sion, self-control, and empathy
through handling horses, both in
and out of the saddle. Horses can-
not be bullied into doing what a
rider wants. A horse gives its best
performance when a rider is
patient and takes the time to
understand it and can therefore
anticipate how the horse will react
to an often changing terrain or sur-
roundings. This understanding and
forethought is particularly impor-
tant as the speed increases. Riders
also must exhibit self-control.
Horses sense fear and react to it. A
rider must exhibit confidence, no
matter what.
