BOOK REVIEW:
Sew Knits with Confidence
Reviewed By: Carolyn Hanson
One of my guilty pleasures is to peruse the new book list on the Somerset County
Library online site. I get to see all the latest craft books, many times as the first
reader.
One of my recent finds was a book about sewing knit fabrics called
Sew Knits with
Confidence
by Nancy Zieman. This is a practical reference book that is so useful
and easily understood for seamstresses of all levels. The book addresses fabric
types, patterns, notions, techniques, designer accents and projects to try. Knits are
so popular in fashion today and Nancy succeeds in explaining how to achieve the
readymade looks that we love to wear.
Nancy initially introduces all of the various knit fabrics with descriptions, close up
photos and characteristics of each giving a clear understanding of stretch, drape
and type of knit, and most importantly why one fabric is used for a particular
design over another.
The author also identifies the best clothing styles for knits including, dresses, skirts,
and pants. One of the book’s most useful features is “Notes from Nancy,” where
yellow stickies highlight important tips or tricks for that section.
Some of my favorite tips:
•
Extend the grain line through the entire pattern piece by folding on the grain
line arrow
•
Use a zigzag seam of .5mm for added stretch
•
Fuse interfacing to the wrong side of pant knees to avoid puckering
•
When creating elastic casing, fuse the fabric seam allowance down so that the
elastic does not catch as it’s threaded through
•
Attach a 2”x 2” piece of fabric to one end of the elastic before threading
through the casing. When the ends meet in a “kiss,” sew the free end of the
elastic to the other half of the fabric swatch. Then trim the fabric. No bulk!
•
Change horizontal buttonholes to vertical layout and eliminate puckering
Notions for Knits
was news to me. I learned to sew in the 70’s and still use my
Sears Kenmore sewing machine, a college graduation gift from my mom. Most of
my notions and tools are also from that era, so I was fascinated by some of the
new tools and notions available. Such inventions include:
•
Pattern weights – weights in varied shapes (rectangular, curved, L-shaped) used
instead of pins to hold pattern to fabric
•
Binding ruler with a 45 degree angle for cutting bias tape
•
Fuse and Gather tape – Fuse the tape to the wrong side and pull the blue
threads to gather the fabric without basting
•
Varieties of elastic such as: buttonhole elastic, clear elastic, draw cord elastic,
and fantastic elastic that can be cut to the desired width without unraveling.
Ingenious!
Nancy addresses basic techniques for running seams, using a serger, and adding
interfacing, buttonholes, and zippers that don’t pucker with clear photos and sim-
ple instructions.
Designer techniques like embellishments, ruffles and flounces, and raw edge fin-
ishes are also explained and illustrated in a step by step method to give you the
confidence needed to try something new.
I’m off to the library for another title from Nancy’s collection.
