TEN FACTS ABOUT GREAT DENTAL HEALTH
By: Francis Barbieri Jr., DDS FAGD
1.
Cavities ARE NOT the #1 rea-
son for tooth loss!
Periodontal dis-
ease is the number one cause of
tooth loss. Most dentists say that
gum disease is a more pressing oral
health issue by a 2 to 1 margin.
2.
Tooth loss is not a natural part
of aging:
most people over 35 lose
teeth because of untreated gum dis-
ease. Periodontal (gum) disease is
treatable and preventable. Teeth are
meant to last a lifetime.
3. 2
+2= good for you:
brush your
teeth at least 2 x /day for 2 minutes
and you will have gone a long way to
prevent many serious dental prob-
lems
4.
The following patients must
not skip regular preventative den-
tal hygiene visit.
Pregnant women,
kids in braces, cancer patients, dia-
betic patients, rheumatoid arthritic
patients, heart disease patients, den-
ture wearers, patients with respirato-
ry disease, osteoporosis patients and
anyone who would like to keep their
teeth healthy for life.
5.
Remember the FBI:
Floss, Brush
and Irrigate. Do it 2x daily in that
order to minimize the need for com-
plex dental treatment.
6.
Athletes who do not wear a
sports mouth guard:
are 60 times
more likely to sustain damage to their
teeth. Wear one. They even come in
team colors.
7.
Electric toothbrushes are more
effective than manual.
Some stud-
ies have shown that you will brush
more effectively with an electric
toothbrush. Those who will benefit
the most children, arthritis patients,
and anyone who suffers from
impaired dexterity or are visually
impaired
8.
I brush, I floss, I still get cavi-
ties!
Start with disclosing solutions.
Ask your hygienist how to use these
to improve your techniques
And:
increase the amount of arginine
in your diet. Some sources are spinach,
soy, seafood and nuts.
And:
xylitol is a great cavity prevention
aide. Look for a chewing gum that has
xylitol listed as the first ingredient
And:
ask your dentist or hygienist
about varnishes that can be applied
to teeth to help prevent cavities
And:
ask your dentist/hygienist about
new enamel recalcification products
that are available.
9.
Periodontal disease has been
underestimated.
A study published
in the Sept 2010 indicates that more
adult Americans suffer from moder-
ate to severe gum disease than was
previously thought; up to 75% of
adults have some form. You should
get a comprehensive periodontal
exam from your dentist once a year.
