Dr. Lawrence Najarian
It was the summer of 1988 and
Dr. Lawrence Najarian remembers
painting the walls of his newly
leased office as songs from Bruce
Springsteen’s Born in the USA tour
blared from a portable radio. The
young doctor was optimistic about
establishing an ophthalmology
practice in Bedminster Township
that would serve the surrounding
communities and beyond.
Two-and-half decades and thou-
sands of patients later, the board-
certified ophthalmologist and
founder of
Bedminster Eye and
Laser Center
realized his dream as
the practice celebrates its 25th
anniversary this year.
“
When I set up my office in Bed-
minster, it was still predominantly a
farming community,” recalls Dr.
Najarian. “I was the second physi-
cian in the area and many residents
were traveling to Somerville, Morris-
town, Summit and even New York
City for eye care.”
Now, the accomplished medical
and surgical eye specialist has last-
ing relationships with generations
of families as the eye care center
grew with the community. Dr.
Najarian, who is also a faculty mem-
ber of both New York University and
New York Eye and Ear Infirmary for
the past 25 years, has become a
local source for routine eye care,
such as eye exams and contacts, as
well as a local respected expert for
conditions such as cataracts, glau-
coma, and multifocal and toric lens
replacement surgery.
He is on call 24/7 to handle emer-
gencies, too, and fondly recalls an
emergency visit that once prompted
a “run-in” with the local police.
“
It was about 1:00am and I had
just treated a patient who had an
eye emergency,” says Dr. Najarian.
“
I had left the door ajar and sud-
denly a policeman walked in and
asked me to freeze. I identified
myself and explained why I was
there at that late hour, but the next
day a headline in the local paper
quipped, “Eagle Eye Officer Catches
Ophthalmologist.”
Giving back to the community
that has supported
Bedminster
Eye and Laser Center
over the
past 25 years is important to Dr.
Najarian. He routinely visits local
senior centers to talk about eye
care, donates sunglasses to charita-
ble organizations and teaches stu-
dents about the physiology behind
eye health. His office regularly hosts
community lectures as well as con-
tinuing medical education seminars
for other eye care specialists.
The staff at
Bedminster Eye
Care
has grown to include Drs. Berit
Goro and Susan Franson, as well as
veteran office assistants who have
been with the practice for more
than 16 years. The office features a
large comfortable waiting area and
multiple exam rooms, decorated in
distinctive themes.
“
When you walk in the door, you
will always be greeted with a
smile,” Dr. Najarian points out. “We
deliver high-tech eye care services
with a hometown touch.”
