High Line

If it’s a beautiful summer day and you
are wondering what to do, the answer is
hop in the car and head to the High Line.
You can be there in less than an hour. If you
haven’t been to the High Line, go now. If
you have – go again. Each year brings new
things to see, do and eat.
The High Line is the 1.45 mile-long ele-
vated track running between Tenth and
Eleventh Avenues from Gansevoort Street
in the Meatpacking District through the
West Chelsea gallery neighborhood to the
Jacob Javits Convention Center. It originally
carried freight traffic 30 feet above the
streets of Manhattan but has been dor-
mant since 1980. The first and southern-
most section of the High Line opened in
June 2009. The opening of the second sec-
tion in 2011 extended the park to 30th
Street, its current northern boundary.
A wonderful thing about the High Line
is that it is constantly changing and always
surprising. Each spring brings the addition
of new plantings, and as the older trees
and shrubs have grown bigger and fuller,
the overall feeling has become more green
and lush, even forest-like in some spots.
The surrounding skyline is a awash with
new buildings, a neighborhood boom due
in large part to the immense popularity of
the High Line and the tremendous number
of locals and tourists that are drawn to the
area. New works of art have been installed
throughout the park. Everything from
abstract sculptures to a full-sized billboard
catches your eye and begs to be pho-
tographed.
This summer, a very special treat is avail-
able for High Line visitors. Artist Carol Bove
has been commissioned to present seven
large-scale sculptures on the third and last
section of the High Line. The work is titled
Caterpillar, and it will be on view until July
20
th, offering a one-time opportunity to
see this currently closed section of the ele-
vated railway in its natural state before it
opens as public parkland in 2014.
Admission is free, but timed tickets must be
reserved online in advance. Visit the High

on this or any of the other daily tours and
activities offered for adults and children.
While a stroll on the High Line is a
refreshing experience in and of itself, it is
also an opportune time to enjoy a delicious
snack or a delightful meal. Pick up coffee
and a muffin or a frosty Mexican ice pop,
find a table or better yet, grab a bench or
one of the built-in lounge chairs, sit back,
relax and watch the world go by. The High
Line is an urban wonder; city life at its best.
