Tie The Knot
NEW JERSEY
SINGLES
Bridgewater
Pamela Kaplan
Director Pam Kaplan of the Bridgewater
office of
New Jersey Singles,
a members-
only matchmaking service with 17 offices
across the country, is resolutely old school.
She’s all for her company’s practice of keep-
ing track of its clients via hard-copy files
and photographs rather than a digital data-
base, and she’s very much against online
dating services.
“
The Internet is like hitchhiking, you go
at your own risk,” says Kaplan, a highly
enthusiastic, blue-eyed, 51-year-old
brunette whose passion for her job is as
authoritative as it is infectious. “There is no
one there to verify if the information any-
one puts on the internet is accurate, so
anyone can say or be anything they want."
According to Kaplan one third of the
individuals using dating sites are already
married, and she’s heard plenty of other
Internet horror stories through the better
part of the 15 years she’s been doing this.
New Jersey Singles
aims to serve as a
refuge for singles fatigued by the whole
modern dating mess, and she takes great
strides to ensure those who walk through
the door don’t run into the kind of stress,
deceit and heartache that can result from
searching for love online.
Individuals looking to join
New Jersey
Singles,
which in New Jersey alone has a
network of thousands of members, must
first meet some crucial criteria. According
to Kaplan, every potential member who
crosses her path is screened with a criminal
background check, as well as investigated
for any history of drugs, alcohol, violence
and severe financial difficulties. That is,
after they pass Kaplan’s personal test.
“
Generally, we sit down for a two-hour
consultation, sometimes even longer, dis-
cussing histories, current struggles and
goals” Kaplan says. “We take an in-depth
look at both the new member and the per-
son they’re looking for. However, if I feel
that someone isn’t right for the program,
we won’t accept them.”
And what can cause someone to be
turned away? Kaplan says one of the
things that makes her job so interesting is
the wide variety of curious characters who
enter her office. Off the top of her head,
she can think of a man who came search-
ing for an escort service, a woman in emo-
tional shambles over a long-distance rela-
tionship with a man she’d never met, and
an older gentleman trying to pass himself
off as being nearly two decades younger.
Kaplan says her knack for what she does
lies in her intuition, her empathy and her
ability to read people. Her selectivity pro-
vides members with the best possible pool
of potential mates, who she says are pri-
marily busy, business professionals.
“
My clients are lonely but they’re not
desperate,” Kaplan says. “They’re nice-
looking, they have money. They don’t have
trouble meeting people, they have trouble
meeting the right person. Many of them
think of our service as outsourcing – we
have the resources to find a compatible
mate for them, and we help to expedite the
process. Some of these people have spent
years and thousands of dollars on the
wrong people. They don’t want to waste
any more time.”
Once in the program, members are
matched on age, compatibility, chemistry,
attraction and long-term goals.
New Jer-
sey Singles
has been in business for over
27
years and is currently serving more than
40,000
clients nationwide. There are four
additional locations in New Jersey, two in
Pennsylvania, and more in places like Texas,
Florida, and California.
Kaplan says her job is extremely reward-
ing, and there's no better feeling in the
world than to help someone find the love
of their life. Kaplan’s clients can attest to
that, especially those who’ve been burned
by online dating. Kaplan says, “Technology
is good, but it’s not so great for finding
love. So many people come to me saying, ‘I
just want to talk to a human being, rather
than answer endless e-mails and actually
meet someone for a date.’”
Kaplan says, “We also provide relation-
ship coaching and counseling for those
who need additional attention.”
New Jersey Singles
takes pride in
our personal one on one approach to
helping people find the relationship they
are looking for.
